Tips to “Green” Your Coffee Habit
You may already consider yourself to be pretty environmentally conscious, and that is likely true, for the most part. There are many small details in our lives, however (or sometimes large ones), that can have much bigger detrimental effects on the earth than most people think about. One of the biggest culprits is how your drink your coffee. The coffee shop business is a big one, and one that many people enjoy, but think of all the extra paper and energy that is wasted. Here are a few tips on how you can enjoy your coffee a little bit greener.
Brewing at Home
The absolute best way to drink “green” is to get into the habit of brewing your own coffee at home. Not only are you saving gas by not making that extra trip to the cafe, but you can control what you use to prepare your drink. This means you can enjoy your beverage without wasting a paper cup (think of how many of these you throw away each year!), plastic stirrer (you might have not even noticed these), paper napkins, etc. For those that already do make most of their coffee at home, there are many ways in which you can decrease your impact on the environment even further. If you are using paper coffee filters, think about making the switch to the reusable kind. This will mean a lot less trash each year. You can also be aware of where the beans that you brew are grown. Choose to purchase from farms with sustainable growing practices. This way you are having the even deeper impact of supporting businesses that will be kind to the earth. You could also consider regularly inviting friends over to share a cup, instead of meeting out somewhere. Not only is this a fun way to catch up, but it means they won’t be out throwing away those paper cups either!
If You Get Stuck Out of the House
Occasionally, you are going to get caught out of the house on a busy day and need that fix. But, if you plan ahead and prepare yourself, you can still be environmentally conscious on the go! Make a habit of bringing a reusable coffee cup out with you if you think you will want to stop for a pick me up. Or, just leave an extra reusable mug in the car so you are always covered. Some coffee shops will even give you a discount if you bring your own cup. These reusable cups are also great for keeping coffee you brew at home nice and hot so you can take it with you.
